A large number of companies and organisations in Ireland offer staff free EAP workplace counselling. EAP stands for employee assistance programme which is typically between 4 and 8 sessions per person per annum. EAP counselling is a short term solution focused approach which is suitable for a wide range of personal and workrelated problems.
Counselling is a process that allows you to work through issues that may be causing you distress or confusion with a person who is professionally qualified to help you. EAP workplace counsellors are very experienced, compassionate and non-judgmental in their approach. Their job is to listen, understand and help you to find solutions to your problems. Being able to talk to someone who will help you recognise your strengths and capabilities, and who will give you practical, concrete support to deal with issues, can be just the help you need to get through a crisis.
Your counsellor will support you to cope with whatever issues are causing you distress and disrupting your life. EAP counselling is solution focused, gently challenging you to face your problems, to set realistic goals for yourself so that you can achieve the solutions that you want. As well as stimulating you to work towards your goals, EAP counselling will help you to identify the resources, strengths, qualities and skills that you have to help you achieve them.
To find out if you have an EAP counselling service in your company or organisation contact your HR department or look out for EAP signage in your organisation. You will them be provided with a confidential helpline number where a clinical case manager will take your information an assign you to a local EAP Counsellor.
